Getting to know Phuket nightlife
By: Prabhat saini
Phuket nightlife takes on many different forms. Phuket is one of Thailand's top destinations and as such there is a diverse range of nightspots on the island. Although Phuket nightlife is not quite on the same level as in Bangkok, that doesn't mean that you won't be able to find somewhere to have fun.

Phuket nightlife is at its most lively in Patong. You'll either love Patong or you'll hate it. The bars are loud, the clubs are obnoxious and the streets are crowded. That being said, Patong is cheap and the bars and clubs stay open later than in other parts of Phuket.

Patong is famous for its nightlife. The center of the action is found on Soi Bangla, which is a hive of go-go bars, discos and stage shows. This is Phuket nightlife at its most seedy, but it can be a lot of fun if you go in the right frame of mind.

Generally speaking, the bars and clubs in Patong churn out hip hop and dance music hits. It can all be a bit predictable, so don't go expecting anything special.

Patong is also known for its girls. Yes, it's true, there are countless bar girls and sex shows in Patong, but the people of Patong make no effort to conceal these facts. Patong is what it is and it's best not to take the whole place too seriously.

Perhaps the most fun that can be had in Phuket is at some of the local clubs. Phuket nightlife is at its most authentic in the small Thai clubs, where you can check out some of the local bands. Phuket Town is probably the best place to sample some Thai-style clubbing.

Also in Phuket Town there are lots of pubs and beer bars and much less of the seedy side of Phuket nightlife.

There are plenty of other areas where you can go and party, but usually they aren't as busy and entertaining as in Patong or Phuket Town. There are a few exceptions scattered around the island in places such as Surin, Kata-Karon and Nai Harn.

The only area that Phuket really lacks anything in terms of nightlife is serious clubbing. There are a few Phuket clubs where you can hear cutting-edge music, but these are few and far between. However, it is possible to catch electro, techno, breaks, house and more in some Phuket clubs and bars.

Phuket could be a major clubbing destination in Southeast Asia, but the island has a long way to go before it can start competing with the likes of Singapore and KL.

For now, Phuket nightlife has enough depth to keep people entertained, but you feel as if there is more to come. The shining beacon of Phuket nightlife is that there is a great live-music scene around the island. There are lots of bands who can rattle out everything from rock and indie to jazz and blues. If you can get into it, there is a top indie scene in Phuket. Pick up some CDs in a local store to get a feel for the music.

How To Plan A Smoke-Friendly Trip
From one perspective, the dramatic rebound of premium cigars couldn't have come at a better time. After decades of competition from cigarettes, the gradual deterioration (through age) of its customer base, and decreased consumer interest in tobacco products generally, the sudden early-nineteen-nineties resurgence of interest in premium cigars was instrumental in keeping the industry alive. After fourth quarter industry growth in 1992 (the first in years), the launch of new magazines devoted to the hobby of cigar smoking, and a proliferation of cigar bars and specialty shops, cigars were trendy for the first time in decades.

But the timing was also somewhat ironic. Between a high-profile class-action suit against cigarette companies and controversies over cigarette advertising - not to mention a general decline in the number of smokers - the world's cigar makers found themselves experiencing new popularity at a time when their industry was also facing new marketing challenges. Along with these changes came a gradual increase in the number of buildings, towns, and sometimes entire states where smoking of all kinds was regulated. All those new cigar smokers found themselves restricted from enjoying their new hobby in airports, restaurants, and entire localities.

All of which raises a question - if you're a smoker traveling the United States, what are your options? To what parts of the United States can you travel if you're hoping to enjoy a box of fine cigars alongside the new sights and sounds?

There's no easy answer to that question, because individual towns and cities within an overall smoking-friendly state can enact their own forms of anti-smoking legislation. But in terms of statewide laws, here is a brief guide to the states with the most permissive - and the most restrictive - smoking legislation.

First of all, the overall news is - if you're planning a true cigar-lover's vacation, you might want to stick to the South (no surprise there) or parts of the Midwest. Of the eighteen states that allow smoking in bars of all kinds, as well as in casinos, restaurants and workplaces, quite a few are in one of these two regions of the country.

Among the southern states with permissive smoking laws are Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Tobacco plays an important role in the history of many of these states: Virginia was a major tobacco producer and smoking hub, not to mention the place where many Union soldiers first discovered the habit of cigar smoking during the Civil War. North Carolina was the scene of the discovery of Brightleaf tobacco, and the home of Durham, a major tobacco city. South Carolina was also, early on, a big tobacco producer.

Other very smoke-positive states include the Midwestern states Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Perhaps smoking helps deal with the harsh winters for which many of these states are infamous. The same beat-the-cold explanation may apply in Alaska, another state with maximally permissive smoking laws, and Kentucky, which I would have counted as a "Midwestern" state, except that some Kentuckians take violent exception to this designation. (Some also don't like it if you call them "southern.") Rounding out the list of the top pro-smoking states are Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

As for the bottom of the list: if you like smoking in bars, restaurants, casinos and workplaces, stay out of Arizona, Delaware, Washington State and Washington D.C., Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, and - no surprise - California. All of these states have enacted the least permissive, widest-scale smoking bans at the statewide level. Not only that, but several of them are cold - it's hard to imagine a worse fate than traipsing around Minneapolis or St. Paul in winter, with an unlightable stogie, exiled from your favorite bar. In Arizona and California, at least it's warm enough out on the sidewalk.

States that allow at least some indoor, public smoking include Tennessee, Arkansas, and Montana, where some bars and casinos allow smoking, as well as Hawaii, Oklahoma, and South Dakota, where bars, casinos and restaurants that allow smoking may be found. Most of the other states have heavier but not full restrictions. (And as for Nevada, if you're wondering - well, you can smoke in some casinos and bars, but not anywhere that serves food.)

Wherever you go, if you're worried about encountering roadblocks to smoking, call ahead to your hotel or visit the city's web page. After all, local ordinances can be as restrictive as any statewide ban. Do research first.

Where Did The Travel Deals Go?
By: Gary Zaccaria
Travelers face higher fares, added fees and more crowded planes. So, what is a traveler to do? According to a recent Associated Press report on travel, “Nearly all of the largest U.S. carriers are making cutbacks. That's bad news for travelers, especially those who fly out of smaller regional airports that are losing flights and service. And it's almost certain to get worse unless oil prices drop and take the pressure off airlines to keep shrinking.”

And air travel comfort and convenience isn’t the only issue. Travelers booking hotel reservations, cruises, car rentals and vacation packages are also feeling the affect of rising oil prices on the ground.
Although many travel search sites exist, rates frequently change depending on basic supply and demand market conditions. Airfares actually change hourly depending on percentages of seats booked. Often times a traveler finds one rate on one site, and “surfs” to another travel search site to make price comparisons only become frustrated after hours of searches, discovering that the “low fare” is no longer available. Conventions can gobble up virtually every available hotel room, leaving the casual travel with few affordable options, driving the prices up and reducing availability.

Bidding online for travel deals has become “caveat emptor” with many people overbidding and not getting much of a value. Sometimes “fees” and “fuel surcharges” are not clearly explained and what seems like a good deal, really isn’t. No longer is it as simple as calling a local trusted travel agent for the lowest rates because most of the brick and mortar agencies have long since closed their doors due to the competition of Internet travel agency firms.

A new method to reduce travel costs, planning group travel has become the latest rage. Group travel specialists put together the free travel quote for families planning trips together for reunions, weddings, religious, and even senior events as well as affinity groups who travel for lodge events, clubs meetings, and fraternity or sorority vacations. Substantial discounts can be obtained this way due to the combined purchasing power.

New technologies are becoming available on the Internet to enable travelers to conduct “power searches”. These advanced search engine technologies are emerging to level the playing field. Using this advanced search technology, instead of spending hours comparing the rates and availability on multiple travel sites, a traveler can obtain more reliable and timely search results in just a few minutes.

Travel consolidators have also put together special trips, cruises, vacation packages or “deals” for private members who are able to choose from a variety of destinations that are “discount” and pre-purchased. This low cost approach has enabled travelers to visit the most popular destinations even during peak periods.
Travelers are also relying on creative ways to budget vacation, including frequent flyer miles and credit card rebate and rewards programs. Hostels have also become popular among travelers. And with rising fares, rail tickets are getting more attention as car rental rates have increased. “Off season” travel has also become a viable option for reducing the overall cost of a trip although weather conditions at favorite destinations are usually the governing factor.

Despite these challenges, travelers are now spending over $7 trillion a year online in booking travel arrangements and that figure is projected to double within a few short years.

Beautiful Holidays: Spanish Style
Many travelers think of a Spanish holiday as an incredibly luxurious vacation. The beautiful countryside, festive events and fascinating culture and history offer a welcome change from the standard "vacation." Now there are more reasons than ever to pursue the dream of a Spanish vacation.

Private villas are a hot trend for the avid vacationer. With such endless possibilities, it's easy to see why the demand is rising. Private villas offer many accommodations and amenities that you won't find elsewhere.

Villas are constructed to be lived in. Unlike hotel or motel rooms that cater to single or double-night occupancy, villas are there to welcome travelers who want to stay a week or a month. They are also less expensive than many hotels.

Villas are much more open and welcoming. They are expansive in comparison to the majority of hotel or motel rooms. They also have all appliances, furniture, linens and towels. Some travelers may even want to take advantage of the villas that offer staff to cater to your every need.

Spanish villas offer all the modern amenities that travelers are accustomed to. Many have private pools, gyms and entertainment centers. The fact that you are staying in a reserved facility ensures you will have more privacy. Each bedroom can have its own closet and bathroom, if that is what you are seeking.

The greatest benefit from villa living is the ability to go where you wish, when you wish. You don't have to stay in a remote area that's miles away. You can stay in the urban area of your choice.

Costa Calida is a beautiful spot for your villa vacation. This Spanish coast is located in the province of Murcia. It has warm weather year-round and offers the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe.

When deciding to rent a villa on this Spanish coast, there are some tips to keep in mind. First, when you locate a suitable property, is the advertisement reliable? It is best to attempt personal contact with any villa owner and speak with a person as opposed to arranging everything via the Internet. The result will be worthwhile. Speaking with the individual ensures you are responding to a legitimate query.

If possible, attempt to get references from previous renters of the property. These should be available online if the owner has an established rental history. Another venue is to find organizations or tourist groups the owner has worked with. This process of verification may save you time and money in the long run.

There currently isn't a "standard" process of payment; this varies by agent or owner. Many owners will request anywhere from 20% to 50% of the amount when you make the reservation. There may also be an amount requested as a security deposit or insurance against damage to the property. This extra amount should be refundable at the end of your visit.

Once you have responded to an offer on a villa, you should allow up to two days for the person placing the ad to return your query. If no reply is given, check with the organization hosting the ad. They may have alternate methods of communicating with the property owner or representative and can help you maintain communication.

Once your villa is rented, you will need to look into transportation during your stay. The Spanish coast is filled with a variety of rental facilities that meet a variety of budgets and preferences. A rental car gives you the freedom to travel wherever you want, when you want.

A private villa and private transportation will give you the freedom to vacation as you please. You can easily have a tranquil and empowering vacation experience in a new and inviting country.
